The automatic cartoning machine automatically loads medicine bottles, blister packs, ointments, and instruction manuals into folding cartons and completes the closing action. Some more advanced automatic cartoning machines also have additional functions such as affixing sealing labels or heat shrink wrapping.

Automatic cartoning machines typically have three feeding inlets: instruction manual inlet, medicine bottle inlet, and carton inlet. The entire process from carton feeding to final packaging can be roughly divided into four stages: unloading, opening, filling, and closing. The unloading action usually involves a suction cup picking up a carton from the feeding inlet and moving it down to the main cartoning line. A guide rail holds the carton in place, and a pusher opens it. Simultaneously, two forward-moving latches rise from below, locking the sides of the carton from the front and back, opening it at a right angle and moving it forward to the filling area. After filling in the filling area, the machine's mechanism folds the tabs into the left and right guide rails before closing the lid. Before closing, the mechanism bends the carton's latch, and a pusher pushes the lid to bend, inserting the latch into the carton and locking it. The closing action is crucial; its success depends heavily on the carton's structure and the accuracy of the machine's adjustments.
